Living My Legacy Now

Living My Legacy Now: The Mary Katherine Krause HSM Endowed Student Career Development Fund for Professional Skills and Resources

My family has a deep history with RUSH University and RUSH University Medical Center. My late father, Roger C. Bone, MD, was a physician-educator-executive at RUSH. My mother, Rosemary Bone Mason, a former nurse, has been a long-time volunteer and donor. All three of us have received cancer treatment and care at RUSH.

Because I also wanted to work in health care, serving patients through the care of others, I got a Master of Science degree in Health Systems Management (HSM). I have volunteered on the HSM faculty for years and have benefited tremendously from my faculty colleagues and students.

As I pondered my own legacy and what I care about, I decided not to wait and to do something NOW that I could start as a healthy, vibrant woman, so I created a fund at RUSH for professional skills.

This fund will support RUSH HSM graduate students in need who will be tackling the difficult job of leading hospitals, health systems and other health care organizations.

Although students receive education in business, finance and other "hard skills," they don’t always learn the crucial "soft skills" also needed to be successful, like presentation skills, professional networking, strategic influence, negotiation and gravitas. Even if taught, students may not get the customized attention required to practice, receive feedback, and perfect results. I’m fortunate that my parents and various mentors and coaches have helped me learn and hone these skills throughout my successful career.

Through this fund, the HSM Chairperson will select specific students each year whose careers will be most benefited through specialized professional skills coaching and mentoring.

My hope is that my HSM faculty and alumni colleagues will consider donating to this fund because its purpose speaks to them. I also hope that my dear friends and family will consider donating on special occasions in my honor.
